With vehicles covering increasing distances and the cost of servicing increasing, manufacturers have been forced to look at ways of producing engines that will last longer whilst ensuring that their low exhaust emissions and fuel economy are maintained throughout their lifespan.
Although materials improved and changes to tensioning systems saw the lifespan of many conventional dry timing belts extend to 100,000 miles they were still perceived as unreliable by many.
The latest version of the timing belt sees a step change in technology with the introduction of a new material, Hydrogenated Nitrile Butadiene Rubber (HNBR). This material is characterised by its high strength and property retention after exposure to heat, oil and chemicals.
Various designs are now being produced for many automotive manufacturers for driving not only camshafts but diesel injection/high pressure fuel pumps and oil pumps.
Commonly these belts are mounted within the cylinder block assembly and lubricated with engine oil. They can use hydraulic tensioner systems similar to those used by timing chain engines.
One major advantage of these wet belts is a reduction in the drive system's friction, as much as 30% is commonly claimed. This can result in quieter operation, improved fuel economy and a reduction of exhaust emissions. The wet belt is seen by some manufacturers as a non maintenance part, others are still listing this new type of belt for replacement as part of regular servicing. We have seen failure as early as 50,000 miles on vehicles with a poor service history.
The traditional plastic timing belt cover is no longer fitted. The timing belt is running inside the engine with the hot oil. This makes the physical strip down of the engine to replace the timing belt cost more labour than a conventional engine.
When the ford service schedule next calls for replacement of the wet timing belt, you may be forgiven for thinking that the service information is incorrect based on a quick look under the bonnet. you may assume it's a chain drive engine because they use the same timing cover design.

Timing tools
We always use the necessary timing and torque tools to ensure 100% correct timing of the engine and assured engine longevity.
Failure is caused by acids in the Engine oil deteriorating the rubber belt. The belt cracks up and falls apart over time weakening the belts structure and causes debris to block the engines oil pump
Oxidation of the oil, contamination from condensation and combustion by-products cause acids to develop in the engine oil that weaken the wet belt.
The blockage of the oil pump causes premature failure of engine components through oil starvation
