Gearbox
The gearbox transmits the rotating force of the engine to the wheels through a series of different sized gears. These gears can be shifted to change the speed and torque. Signs of gearbox issues include:
Unable to select certain gears.
Grinding noises when shifting gears.
Whining noise when cruising.
Gearbox oil leaks.
Clutch
The clutch takes the rotating force of the engines crankshaft and transfers it through the gearbox input shaft to the wheels. It does this using the clutch pedal to control 2 hydraulic cylinders. The clutch is made up of two pieces a friction plate attached to the gearbox input shaft and a pressure plate bolted to the flywheel. The pressure plate has internal springs that are controlled by being pushed by a release bearing. Signs of clutch issues include:
Judder when setting off caused by a warped pressure plate.
Burning smell of a worn friction plate.
Loss of drive through broken/ worn out friction plate.
Loss of pedal hydraulics.
Heavy clutch pedal from siezed pressure plane springs.
Hydraulic clutch cylinders
There are two Hydraulic cylinders involved in clutch control, a master cylinder connected to the clutch pedal and a slave cylinder connected to the gearbox controlling the clutch release bearing using hydraulic brake fluid. Signs of a failed hydraulic cylinder include:
Unable to select gears.
Spongy clutch pedal.
Clutch pedal doesn't return to top without assistance
Dirty clutch fluid in reservoir from deteriorating cylinder seals.
Wet marks from leaking fluid between gearbox and engine.
Flywheel
The flywheel is a heavy disk of metal bolted to the end of the engines rotating crankshaft. The clutch pressure plate bolts to the opposite side from the crankshaft. The flywheel has a ring gear around the outside edge for the starter motor to turn the engine when the key is turned. Signs of a failing flywheel include:
Juddering from warped flywheel.
Rattling from a failed dual mass flywheel.
Shaking through the car when engine idling.
Driveshafts
The drive shafts connect the gearbox to the wheels. They have a flexible joint on each end to allow for movement of the suspension and steering. Signs of a failing driveshaft include:
Knocking sound when turning from worn joint bearings.
Loss of drive from a snapped driveshaft.
